Acknowledging Risk & Wisdom
“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” – Isaac Newton
True progress is seldom made in isolation - it grows from building on the wisdom of those before us, learning alongside our peers, and drawing strength from those still pushing the boundaries today.
Exploration of wild places is a privilege supported by many: from the traditional custodians of the land, private landowners, and dedicated volunteer care groups, to organisations like Canyoning Australia, emergency services, and land managers including NSW National Parks, and the City Councils of the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury. Their collective contribution allows us to responsibly access and experience these environments.
The Canyoning Coach logo reflects this harmonious spirit of respect and innovation. It brings together the Spiny Crayfish - a native inhabitant of the Blue Mountains canyons - with the Phoenix CRT, a rigging device influenced by Rich Carlson’s Totem descender. This emblem captures a dual passion: for pioneering gear and for safeguarding the unique ecosystems we explore.
My own development as a canyoning coach has been shaped not only by direct hands-on experience, but by the generosity of countless professionals. Through remote expeditions, years of fieldwork, workshops, manuals, forums, conferences, industry committees, accident investigations, and educational collaborations, I’ve learned that growth is always a shared endeavour. As Warren Bennis said, “None of us is as smart as all of us.”
That’s why direct, hands-on coaching with a skilled professional is not optional - it’s essential. Mastery doesn’t begin in high-risk situations. It starts in safe, low-risk settings where techniques and systems can be understood, practiced, refined, and tested - ensuring not just competence, but safety for you and those around you.
In remote, wet canyons at height, the stakes are real. The difference between a safe, memorable journey and a tragedy can hinge on subtle rigging, procedural, and planning decisions. That is why a thorough benefit-risk assessment (BRA) is non-negotiable. You must understand the hazards and anticipate their consequences.
A sentiment often heard from canyoning trainees is:
“I had no idea of the actual risks. I can’t believe the risks I’ve taken in the past with my friends.”
This underscores the importance of informed preparation. You cannot leave such adventures to chance - learn how to facilitate an inspiring adventure and how to avoid a misadventure.
As Edward Whymper warned:
“Climb if you will, but remember that courage and strength are naught without prudence, and that a momentary negligence may destroy the happiness of a lifetime. Do nothing in haste, look well to each step, and from the beginning think what may be the end.”
With a few deliberate rigging and trip-planning strategies, you can transcend from simply 'risking' the canyon to 'mastering' it. Learn to relax and to approach each obstacle with quiet, respectful confidence and clear intention.
This grounded assurance empowers you not only to reclaim boldness, to return safely for the next weekend’s adventure, but also to develop a presence of mind that opens you to hear and feel Ngurra (Country). When a canyoning journey ends, the experience can be more than just a thrilling day - it can offer a deepened reverence for nature and self, a connection and trust that endures a lifetime.
“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” - John Muir
